When talking about the Beijing 2008 Olympics, we would think of its slogan – “One World, One Dream” and the three concepts – “Green Olympics, High-tech Olympics and People’s Olympics”. Without doubt, all these ideas are great for holding such an international games and show the decision of the government that it would do something to change the old image people have of the Chinese governments. Without observation of how’s Beijing carrying out its promises, however, as an Olympic volunteer I actually know clearly that things are not all go with them in Qinhuangdao, the co-host city of Beijing Olympic Games.

One of the three concepts violated in Qinhuangdao is the “High-tech Olympics”. I work in the Competition Information Department and all information about the competition will be sent to us and handed out to those who need it. As I thought before the work started, there would be a computer-based information management system which could help gathering and distributing information and that’s surely what a “High-tech Olympic” calls for. However, on the first day I got to my work place, I found I was wrong. There’s no such software and most computers of the offices were not even connected in one network! All information could be sent only by hand or by the only fax in our office. Our main work is to photocopy the notices and schedules and walk over the office building to send them. And if some of them are urgent we had to run to save time! I don’t thing that any one could think that this is “high-tech” and even “green” as we are using lots of paper for copying files.

But even though, I prefer to believe that this is only happened in Qinhuangdao. Because as far as I know, the preparation of the football matches of the Olympiad in Qinhuangdao is almost held separately. Except for the initial training and providing necessary materials, Beijing doesn’t control the preparing work in Qinhuangdao. So how the daily work is done is decided by officials of Qinhuangdao.

Perhaps there are too much co-host cities in this Olympic Games, which could cause things out of control. And making all these cities to act at the same level is really difficult. After all they are not all so developed cities like Beijing and Hong Kong.
